Minute of Inclusion
Las Cruces Friends Monthly Meeting in recognition of the Quaker tenet of that of god within each individual, the ability of individuals to discern their inner light as it speaks to their leadings, identity, and character, and the Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community and Equality, wish to make a declaration of inclusion.
We recognize and accept into our meeting those of all races, ages, religions, creeds, and socio-economic status. We recognize and accept the diverse spectrum of sexual orientation and gender identity. We affirm the right of individuals to speak their characters and identities to us as they have been revealed to them. We remain open and accepting of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, or questioning. We will not deny any individuals within our community of any benefits we may accord others, including but not limited to: community, friendship, participation in worship or committees, participation in other Quaker events under the care of our meeting, and marriage.
Who are we?
We are the Las Cruces Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers. Our Quaker Community House is located at 622 N. Mesquite. Meeting for Worship is every Sunday at 10:00 AM.
What do we believe?
We believe that ‘There is that of GOD in every person.” Quakerism arose in the 1650s in England. George Fox is regarded as the founder, but he really just pulled together many separate groups of people who were unhappy with the present forms of religion. They were meeting in houses all over England and Europe to “wait upon the Lord”, feeling that in silence they would hear directly the voice and guidance of God. This ultimately became the Religious Society of Friends and exists in the same form today.
Quakers believe that every human being has an innate connection to God, or Spirit or Light Within. If we open ourselves to that Light it can guide our lives, our families and communities. We define that Light in different ways, but we strive to live lives of simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality with compassion for every person on the planet.
Together we work for peace and social justice and care of the environment. All of our testimonies and actions derive from that basic believe that every person has the same Light, or Divine Spirit within.
We have no creed. We are all Seekers.
How do we worship?
In our meeting for worship we sit silently, each person attentive to the Inner Prompting of the Spirit, until someone feels led to speak. Speech should be brief and helpful to the Spiritual Life of the meeting.
In this silence we give energy to setting aside those things that tend to clutter up our ability to discern Divine influences when we were not setting in silence. Also, we invite the intelligence of Life to dance with us and to become involved in our attitude and in every decision that we make in our daily lives.
Children are always welcome, but we do not currently have an active childcare program. For parents who wish to attend regularly with children who do not enjoy a full hours silence, the community will seek to help share childcare.
On the second Sunday of the month we vary our silent worship with an activity in which all ages join, followed by a potluck lunch.
The Las Cruces Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is a member of the Inter Mountain Yearly Meeting (IMYM). We are especially active in issues of peace and social concerns, as Quakers have been historically. We follow the silent meeting form of service in which members and attenders meet in silence until someone feels moved to speak.
We meet monthly for business (hence the name "monthly meeting") and weekly on First Day (Sunday) for silent worship. We have no minister, the meetings for business and worship being convened by the Clerk, who serves for no longer than two years.
